Interim Director: Mary Finney, Interim Director, reported that the Million Page Challenge between Harney and Lake County Library; Pendleton Public Library; and Hood River Library District was going pretty well. Pendleton is definitely in second place. She urged members to get their numbers in as Hood River’s patrons were not that far behind. Because of this is Harney County’s third year in doing this, their patrons have taken a strong lead and don’t appear to be waning. For the first year, second is OK. The patrons seem to be having a fun time with this contest. That is what counts!
In an attempt to bolster lagging circulation numbers, Finney and Interim Assistant Director, Jennifer Furuyama, are increasing materials purchases in areas where numbers are declining. Katie Shurts is weeding the large print section to make way for new titles. The weeded large print items will be used to populate a Little Read Book Shelf in the Senior Center. The Center is trying to find a place for the shelf. We’ll have it installed as soon as possible.
The surveys have been sent out and are coming back slowly. If the numbers are too low, Finney will extend the deadline until the end of April.
Furuyama has been invited to provide a storytime for the Behavior Room at McKay Elementary. The Behavior Room was specifically set up to assist children ages 8 to 11 who struggle to maintain composure in the classroom. It is great to receive such an invitation.
Technology Services staff member, Heather Culley, attended the Online Northwest 2015 conference at OSU on February 13th. The conference focused on the use of technology within libraries. Of special interest were programs which could be applied toward the library webpage and the webpage upgrades needed for the city web presence.
OLD BUSINESS
Board member recruitment: John Thomas has been assigned to the Library Board by Mayor Houk. We look forward to his expertise and support. Finney will contact Bill Grable who has expressed interest in joining the board.
UCSLD Agreement: Finney reported that the UCSLD agreement had been sent to the city for the City Manager, library staff, and city legal staff’s review prior to being presented to the Mayor and Council for approval. The new agreement is basically the same as the 2005 agreement except in a more up to date language and the inclusion of two positions which were not included in the earlier agreement. The agreement should go before council in April.
NEW BUSINESS
Board retreat takeaways: Board members expressed satisfaction with the information provided by Davin Diaz of the Mid-Columbia Library District. The ideas of promoting the library’s webpage was informative. Reducing the focus on circulation numbers and increasing the adult programs and outreach projects were of special interest.
